Police Apprehend Suspect After Shots Fired at UC Berkeley's Lower Sproul Plaza.
The shelter-in-place order, initially issued as a precautionary measure, was lifted at 9:52 p.m., as confirmed by an updated WarnMe notification. Prior to this, Bancroft Way had been cordoned off at College Avenue, with police actively searching for suspects. Eyewitnesses reported at least one individual being handcuffed near the scene, and video footage captured an individual discharging shots into the air on Lower Sproul Plaza.
Despite shots being heard around 8:40 p.m., the WarnMe notification alerting the campus community was delayed until 9:20 p.m., describing the incident as an "aggravated assault." Approximately 100 students sought refuge in the Recreational Sports Facility (RSF), while others at Unit 3 and attendees at a Cal Performances event at Zellerbach Hall also sheltered in place.
Concerns arose regarding the timing and mode of communication, as UC Berkeley had recently issued a campuswide email emphasizing emergency preparedness in active shooter situations, urging individuals to sign up for WarnMe text alerts. However, in this instance, students received an email notification 30 minutes after the initial reports of gunfire, raising questions about the effectiveness of the alert system.
This incident underscores the ongoing importance of emergency preparedness and effective communication protocols within educational institutions. As the situation unfolds, updates will be provided to ensure the safety and well-being of the UC Berkeley community.
